Minister for Commerce and Supplies Ganeshman Pun has said that the government would step up and expand market monitoring across the country.Kathmandu, July 9
Speaking at a programme organised in the capital, he also apprised that the government would not remain a mute spectator to the chaos in the consumer market. “The government will not spare any employee who fails to maintain market integrity through regular monitoring and inspection,” he said.
Minister Pun highlighted the grim reality of the market that he witnessed during a week-long special monitoring in Kathmandu. “Many dealers and suppliers have been selling and distributing substandard foods that are unfit even for animal consumption. Keeping in mind the deteriorating market culture, the government will be making active the chief district officer-led district market monitoring committee throughout the country. Any official default in performance will also be liable to legal action,” he warned.
A market inspection and monitoring team led by Minister Pun had yesterday found two slaughterhouses in Kathmandu supplying rotten, maggot-infested buffalo meat in the market.
He also informed that the government was set to launch the protection of consumer interest campaign in an integrated manner from the next fiscal 2016/17, while maintaining inter-ministry coordination.
“The government will also carry out a follow-up monitoring to ensure that the concerned traders refrain from committing foul play. It is high time to put all our efforts in finding ways to purge the market. It is as difficult as carrying a gun in the war,” said Minister Pun, who is also an ex-Maoist combatant.
