Dr KC to launch hunger strike again

 |
Dr. KCKATHMANDU, Nepal – Dr Govinda KC, a senior Professor at Tribhuvan University’s Institute of Medicine (IoM), said that he will stage a fast-unto-death from Sunday despite the decision by the IoM not to grant affiliations to new medical colleges.
A meeting of the faculty board of IoM held on Thursday decided not to grant affiliations to new medical colleges for the time being.
Dr KC, who has already staged hunger strikes four times in the past, said that he sticks to his decision, as the concerned officials have not paid any heed to his warning.
The 10-day ultimatum given by Dr KC to the government to fulfill past accords is ending on Saturday.
“The decision of the faculty board is nothing. They have taken such decision four times in the last two years,” complained Dr KC, adding, “I am left with no option, when the prime minister himself is not sincere toward his words.”
He further complained that Prime Minister Sushil Koirala had assured him that no new medical college would be given affiliation until a new policy on medical colleges is formed.
“But he has written a letter to the Ministry of Education (MoE) to provide affiliation. Who can we trust?” questioned Dr KC.
PM Koirala, through the Ministry of Education (MoE), had instructed the TU to direct IoM to start granting new affiliations.
Dr KC on Friday had informed Chief Secretary Leelamani Paudyal that he will stick to his decision and will start hunger strike from Sunday.
Chief Secretary Poudel had congratulated Dr KC about the decision of faculty board via SMS on Friday.
Earlier, Dr KC had submitted memo to Chief Secretary Poudel and to Prime Minister Koirala outlining his 10-point demands.
